Part A - Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, nursing facilities, hospice, and some types of home health care. There is a deductible for Part A, but in most cases it's premium-free if you or your spouse have paid taxes.

Part B - Medical Insurance

Medicare Part B is medical insurance for outpatient care and preventive services. It covers medically necessary services for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of certain conditions.

Part C - Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, allows Medicare benefits to be provided through a private company approved and contracted under Medicare. This plan includes Parts A and B, and other benefits that Medicare may not cover, such as vision and dental services. It may also include Part D, prescription drug coverage.

Part D - Prescription Drugs

Medicare Part D is a prescription drug coverage policy covering most generic and name-brand drugs. Its purpose is to help people faced with rising — or already high — prescription drug costs.

Medicare Coverage Options

Now that you understand the different parts of Medicare, let’s cover the different coverage options

Original Medicare

Original Medicare includes only Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Because it does not provide coverage for dental, vision, or prescription drugs, those coverages must be bought separately. Additionally, beneficiaries are responsible for certain copays and deductibles.

Medicare Advantage - Part C

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and include Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), and usually Part D (prescription drugs). Some plans also include vision and dental.

Medicare Supplement - Medigap

Medicare Supplement, also known as Medigap, is insurance that helps fill the gaps in Original Medicare. Medigap is sold by private companies and can help cover copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Certain Medigap policies cover services not covered by Original Medicare, such as care needed when traveling internationally.
